When did brontosauruses start getting called "apatosauruses"? And why?

I'd never seen these "ancient Mexican sculptures" before - they provide amazing proof that dinosaurs and humans coexisted! In fact it is so amazing I find it impossible to believe, although I am prepared to accept the sculptures as evidence that (a) the hallucinogenic plant peyote is native to Mexico and/or (b) kids make kooky art.
